Friday Night Fever 2014 @ Richcoln

Date: 2014-05-09

The recent introduction of a new range of loudspeakers by Bryston, Canada's largest manufacturer of professional audio products, has caused a sensation in the industry. Bryston has earned its reputation by building audio equipment for professionals. Quality components, excellent performance, reliability and stability, ample power delivery and neutrality of sound enable these products to find their way to studios, movie studios, broadcasting stations, TV stations, and even the NASA. As the first transducer products ever made in the history of Bryston, these speakers won favourable reviews when launched and became the targets of consumers. Aware of our introduction of Bryston's HT (Home Theater) Series of speakers, Hiendy, a local audio/video club, offered to organize a demo session for their prestigious members. An event featuring a full Bryston AV system, with Friday Night Fever 2014 @Richcoln as the theme, took place at the Richcoln Home Theater Center on 2nd May.

The demonstration began with a fiery movie scene. The ultra-wide dynamic range and retrieval of nuances fully manifested the qualities of the Bryston AV equipment and impressed all Hiendy members at the venue. Some of them came merely for the Bryston SP3 surround-sound processor. Mr. Franz Chan gave a detailed account of the glorious history of Bryston and the technology behind the professional home theater system on demonstration. Founded over 35 years ago Bryston Corporation specializes in amplification products: the current 4B power amplifier is the fifth generation of the classic 4B. Each amplifier uses high quality components, which are hand-soldered and assembled for assured quality control. Each finished product undergoes strict tests prior to delivery. Amplifier circuits are fully balanced with independent power supplies. Measurements as appear in user manuals are excellent and proven. Bryston power amplifiers are capable of superb control over loudspeakers and maintaining neutrality irrespective of power output level. It is therefore unsurprising that they are widely used in professional recording studios.

The SP3, an upgraded version of its successful predecessor SP2, differs from its Japanese counterparts in the absence of fancy functionality and the emphasis on sonic performance. The SP3 does not incorporate video processing, which has become unnecessary with the superb video output quality of most blue-ray disc players. Besides, the ever-changing video specifications require updated products to match, rendering video processing useless. On the contrary Bryston opts to improve the sound quality of multi-channel audio outputs. No sound degrading automatic system configuration or spacial compensating EQ is used to avoid dwarfing the sound processing capability of the DSP. The SP3 is capable of decoding all known surround effects thanks to its employment of two 32-bit DSP chips to accelerate data processing, greatly elevating the power of resolution and precision. Equipped with independent, multi-stage power supplies, the 7.1-channel audio output stages of the analogue section is fully balanced and operates in pure Class-A. Four Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC chips provide top quality audio output amplification for high-definition systems. The SP3 has two independent amplifying circuits, one dedicated for AV decoding and the other for high fidelity two-channel analogue inputs. The perfect blend of both worlds soon won recognition of JBL and Lexicon, the tycoons of the AV industry, who offered collaboration and make the SP3 their OEM product. The SP3 is a surround-sound processing preamplifier dedicated to audiophiles.

The Bryston HT Series comprises floorstanders, shelf-mounted models, center-channel speakers, active subwoofers, on-wall and in-wall speakers, designed to reproduce the wide dynamic effects of movies. Mid-bass drivers use rigid, light metal cones, with wide rubber surrounds to allow longer excursions thereby achieving high power capacity. A row of reflex ports are arranged close to the top of the back panel and are shaped to suppress the noise of air turbulence within the enclosure. The top floorstander Model T and Model TC-1 incorporate dual tweeters and dual midrange drivers, mainly to increase the quantity of the mid-high register and power handling capacity of the drive units thereby reducing compression and correlated distortions at high sound pressure level. The Model T Subwoofer incorporates three 8-inch bass drivers for widened dynamic range and improved control in the lower register. Only one is required to fill a room of 60 square metres with ample punch. Partnering the Bryston 14B SST², 7B SST² and 9B SST² power amplifiers, these speakers gave an easy, warm and energetic sound, robust yet with the right pace.

The one-and-a-half-hour demo session ran fast and ended in a lucky draw and a group photo. We hope that all attendees had had a pleasant, satisfactory weekend.
