Mastering techniques demonstrated at Metropolis with PMC monitors

Date: 2009-12

UK loudspeaker manufacturer PMC held a successful Mastering Masterclass at Metropolis Studios in the autumn. Audiophiles and members of the press gathered to hear explanations of stereo and surround mastering techniques by Metropolis's engineers, illustrated by practical examples played through the studios' PMC speaker arrays.

Metropolis Studios, West London, recently played host to a well-attended evening masterclass on mastering techniques, organised in conjunction with monitor manufacturer PMC. Audiophile members of the public rubbed shoulders with Editors from the recording and hi-fi press as Metropolis engineers demonstrated some of the tricks of their trade through PMC's hi-fidelity speaker arrays and answered questions from those present.

Metropolis's Miles Showell, demonstrating via a pair of PMC TB2S-A MkII speakers, ran attendees through a typical analogue stereo mastering workflow, including a live demonstration of half-speed vinyl mastering, while in one of Metropolis's 5.1 post-production and DVD Mastering suites, Mazen Murad explained the process of preparing audio for 5.1 release, including demonstrations from two very different DVDs recently mastered at Metropolis. 'Get Ready', a live Temptations DVD, featured original studio tracks newly remixed into 5.1 for the DVD and superb isolated vocal performances in 5.1 as an audio 'extra', while Dusty Springfield's 'Once Upon A Time' featured audio upmixed into 5.1 from mono mixdowns in the absence of the original multitrack tapes. Those gathered lingered far longer than planned enjoying the classic performances in surround through Metropolis's floorstanding BB5 XBD-A monitors.

"We were pleased to be associated with another excellent educational open evening at Metropolis — a good time was had by all!" comments Keith Tonge, Marketing Manager at PMC. "We will be announcing more events like this in the New Year on our web site, so stay tuned — places are, unfortunately, always limited."
